What is an ISA certified arborist?

An arborist is a tree care specialist. If an arborist is "ISA certified" this means that they have fulfilled the requirements to be recognized by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). This certification is proof that an arborist has exceptional knowledge and experience in their field.

To qualify for ISA certification, an arborist must have at least three years of working experience in arboriculture or a related field. Working to obtain a degree in arboriculture, forestry or a similar tree-related field may count in place of some work experience. To obtain their certification, arborists must pass an exam that covers a broad range of tree care topics, including tree biology, pruning, treatment of tree diseases, and safe tree work practices.

To maintain their certification, ISA certified arborists must earn continuing education units as proof that they're keeping up with new tree care techniques and ongoing research in the field. ISA certified arborists are also required to adhere to a code of ethics which involves following industry approved tree care practices.

An ISA certified arborist is trained on all elements of tree care, including how to diagnose and treat diseases and pest infestations, how to properly fertilize and prune trees to encourage healthy growth, and how to remove a tree that has declined beyond saving and may become a hazard.
